Chewy was originally founded under the name “Mr. Chewy” in September 2011 by Ryan Cohen and Michael Day. Cohen came up with the concept while shopping for Tylee, his toy poodle. The company was initially operating on MyChewy.com and later on upgraded to the domain Chewy.com. They acquired the name from domain investor Frank Schilling for an undisclosed amount.
In 2017, PetSmart acquired Chewy.com for $3.35 billion in the largest e-commerce acquisition up to date. In 2019 Chewy filed for an IPO at US$ 22 per share.
