On May 23, 2022, Fortune announced its annual list of the largest corporations in the United States, ranked by revenue for the 2021 fiscal year. This year’s list of 500 companies generated a record $16.1 trillion in revenue and $1.8 trillion in profits. Female CEOs lead 44 of the 500 companies on this year’s list, an all-time record. We analyzed the list of Fortune 500 for 2022 and grouped them by their domain choices. Here’s what we have learned.
Fortune 500 brands with .com domain name extension
Unsurprisingly, over 99% of Fortune 500 companies operate on a .com domain name. Only 4 companies out of 500 have chosen to operate on an alternative to the .com extension. The .com is the gold standard for reliability and highlights the brand’s credibility. It is the largest top-level domain with over 130 million .com names registered, making it the natural choice of internet users.
2 companies on the list use the .xyz extension.
.xyz was proposed as part of ICANN’s New generic top-level domain (gTLD) Program, and it went live on June 2, 2014. The .xyz domain extension made its big breakthrough in 2015 when Alphabet Inc. (one of the companies on the list) began using it.
Fortune 500 Brands with domain names exactly matching their brand
452 companies have invested in exact brand match domains. A solid online presence is critical to any company’s success. An exact-match top-level domain name ensures that the business will be easily found online, as the default domain is what customers will look for when trying to reach the brand. Here is what owners of premium domain names share about the benefits of owning and investing in such names.
Fortune 500 companies and three-letter .com domain names
53 companies on the list own a three-letter .com domain name. Three-letter .com domains hold significant value because of their rarity and high demand. They are also short and easy to remember. Names like that are rare branding assets and communicate instant authority and trust.
Two-letter .com domain name amongst Fortune 500 brands
11 companies on the Fortune 500 list have invested in a rare and valuable two-letter .com domain name. Only 676 two-letter .com domain names exist, and they are highly sought-after for their uniqueness and rarity.
Uses of dash in domain names of Fortune 500 brands
6 companies use a dash in their domains. Adding hyphens is not advised since it adds complexity for consumers who frequently overlook it while typing in a domain name.
