The Minneapolis-based Flipgrid launched in 2015 as Vidku, a video-discussion platform started by a University of Minnesota professor as a way to stay in touch with his students for a course he was teaching.
After significant growth, Flipgrid has become a powerful tool that allows Educators to create and share discussion topics with their learning community and learners to record and share their short videos. Microsoft saw Flipgrid as an effective tool and acquired the company in 2018. More than 7 billion videos have been created or shared on Flipgrid in 190 countries worldwide.
Flipgrid recently hosted a major event called Flipfest, where it announced a simplification of its name to Flip along with improvements and new features expected to be released very soon.
Flipgrid is now Flip! We have a new name, a new look, and even a new mascot, Smubble, but we’re still the same product you know and love. Why the change? Over the past decade, you took the technology we built and made it something more than we ever imagined.
Flip also invested in the shorter and simpler premium domain Flip.com.
Most of the global edtech unicorns operate on .com domains matching their brand name to communicate trust and authority, as well as maximize their marketing efforts.
