We recently analyzed 99 Fast-Growing Edtech Startups in 2021 and Their Domain Names, and now we’ll focus on global Edtech Unicorns and their domain choices.

Overview

Technology is everywhere, even more now, when the pandemic forced us to step outside our comfort zone and rethink how we work, socialize, and deliver impact. The COVID-19 epidemic has increased the demand for education to undergo a digital transition, driving many educational institutions to move online. The value of EdTech is not just based on its ability to reduce costs and engage students in new and inventive ways but to equalize standards and enable access to all.

A Unicorn is a private company with a valuation of over $1 billion. According to Global Edtech, there are presently 31 EdTech unicorn companies operating around the globe. The majority are based in North America or Asia; fifteen are headquartered in the United States, seven in China, and three in India. Taiwan, Canada, Austria, Australia, and Israel are home to the remaining EdTech unicorns. Companies that provide private tuition, homework, and revision aid make up a substantial component of the Asian EdTech Unicorns.

Appinventiv has highlighted the following types of EdTech ideas that are changing the education landscape and are attracting investors’ attention:

EdTech Unicorns worldwide have collectively raised over $21 billion of total funding in the last decade and are now valued at more than $95 billion. This only shows that EdTech is here to stay, with the worldwide EdTech market expected to rise to $ 234 billion by 2027.

We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.

Namepicks

ByJu’s

Launched in 2015, BYJU’S is India’s largest ed-tech company that offers personalized and effective learning programs. In June, Byju’s became India’s most valuable unicorn with a valuation of $16.5 billion. The company recently raised $1.2 billion via a term loan from the overseas market.

ByJu’s has secured an exact brand match domain name for their brand – byjus.com.

Outschool

Outschool’s Edtech platform brings together students, parents, and teachers to create fantastic learning experiences. In October, the company raised $110 million at a $3 billion valuation.

Outschool has chosen a domain name that corresponds to their global ambitions and communicates their vision – Outschool.com.

BetterUp

BetterUp is a Fortune 500 company’s preferred choice mobile-based leadership development platform. The startup has raised over $500 million, reaching a Unicorn status. BetterUp is included in our October 2021 Funded Startups and Their Domain Name Choices list.

In keeping with its brand identity, BetterUp has secured the EBM domain betterup.com. The .com extension is what visitors intuitively lean towards when typing a web address.

Quizlet

Using activities and games, Quizlet provides students with a way to enhance what they’ve learned. In 2020, Quizlet reached Unicorn status with a $30 million funding round at a $1 billion valuation.

Quizlet has secured the EBM domain name quizlet.com. A creative and catchy name like Quizlet gives more attention and attraction towards the brand.

Masterclass

Masterclass provides video-based vocational courses. The company joined the Unicorn Club in May 2021, raising $225 million in a Series F funding round.

Matserclass has invested in Matserclass.com – an exact brand match .com name. This is the natural choice of most internet users, and securing that domain for their business is a clear indication that Masterclass is here to stay.

Highlights

Only 3 companies out of 33 have chosen to operate on an alternative to the .COM extension. In April this year .COM was ranked as the most popular extension worldwide. 2 EdTech Unicorns use the .ORG extension. .ORG is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) which stands for “organization”; it is frequently used for charities and non-profit organizations.

1 company operates on the local country extension .CN – the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the People’s Republic of China.

None of the companies on the list have included a hyphen in their domain names. It is sometimes used when startups can’t get the not hyphenated version of the domain or to separate words, but it can cause traffic and email leaks as well as security risks and confusion with customers and business partners.
