DC Comics: Bridging History and Future with DC.com
By Tsani Gramatikova access_time 2 min read

DC Comics, Inc., commonly known as DC, is an American comic book publisher and the flagship unit of DC Entertainment, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. The “DC” in DC Comics stands for “Detective Comics,” a title first published in 1937. Despite the apparent redundancy in the name “Detective Comics Comics,” it is deeply rooted in the company’s rich history.

A Brief History of the Name

DC Comics’ journey began in 1934 with Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson’s founding of National Allied Publications. Their first major title was “New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine,” followed by “New Comics.” However, Wheeler-Nicholson’s financial struggles led to a partnership with Harry Donefeld, resulting in the release of “Detective Comics #1” in 1937. This series introduced iconic characters like Batman in “Detective Comics #27.”

The partnership formed to publish “Detective Comics” evolved into Detective Comics, Inc., bringing in co-owner Jack Liebowitz. Wheeler-Nicholson eventually sold his share to Donefeld, leading to the introduction of Superman in “Action Comics.” Detective Comics, Inc. later acquired National Allied Publications.

By 1940, Detective Comics, Inc. issues featured a seal stating “A DC Publication,” which evolved to “A Superman DC Publication” as Superman became the brand’s flagship character. In 1946, the company merged its various entities into a single organization, with the seal reading “Superman DC National Comics.”

It wasn’t until the early 1970s that the seal was simplified to just “DC.” The consistent presence of “DC” in their publications led to the informal adoption of the name “DC Comics.” In 1977, the company officially adopted the name DC Comics within its publications.
