Shopify Acquires Shop.com From Market America
By Monica Stankova access_time 3 min read

Market America Worldwide has sold Shop.com to Shopify, transferring one of the most recognisable and category-defining domain names in e-commerce to the platform behind millions of online stores.

Market America acquired Shop.com in 2011 and spent the following years developing it into an international shopping destination serving customers and its network of UnFranchise Owners. The company is now moving its own commerce operations to a reimagined MarketAmerica.com, launched on September 22 and built on Shopify.

The domain reportedly sold once before, in 2003, for $3.5 million. The price of the latest sale was not disclosed in the announcement, but it has already drawn attention across the domain industry. In an X post, domain entrepreneur Andrew Rosener said Shopify paid $100 million for Shop.com. That figure has not been confirmed by either company. If it is verified, the deal would surpass the current publicly reported record for a domain-only sale, AI.com at $70 million.

We’ll be watching for any further details that could confirm the price of the acquisition.

Where Shop.com Points Today

Shop.com now leads to Shop, Shopify’s consumer-facing shopping platform, which until recently operated on Shop.app. Shopify launched the app in April 2020 as an evolution of its package-tracking app Arrive, adding product discovery, brand pages and purchasing through Shop Pay.

In 2025, Shopify added Shop.ca and Shop.us to its portfolio, purchasing the two domains from Toronto-based Emerge Commerce for US$375,000. It also owns Shop.ai, a sign of Shopify steadily building a stronger online presence around its Shop brand.

Shopify’s Domain Portfolio

According to Whoxy data, Shopify is associated with more than 30,000 domain names. The portfolio covers different extensions, product and service names, regional variations and a large number of defensive registrations.

Among them are domains such as Shop.com, Shop.ai, Shop.app, Shop.ca, Shop.us, Shopify.io and Shopify.ai, along with misspellings like Shpoifi.com, Shqoify.com, Shroify.com, Slopify.com and Shpoafy.com, and many others.

For a company of Shopify’s size, a portfolio like this is not a surprise. Shopify’s name carries the trust of millions of merchants and shoppers, and owning common misspellings, alternative extensions and regional variants is a standard way for large brands to protect their online presence. It helps reduce the risk of phishing, fake stores and brand confusion, and keeps competitors and squatters away from the name.

A Strategic Domain Upgrade

Shop.com is one of the most valuable domains Shopify could own, particularly for a company of its scale with commerce at the core of its business.

Moving Shop to the Exact Brand Match (EBM) domain name Shop.com gives the platform a more intuitive, memorable and authoritative address. For a global company like Shopify, the upgrade strengthens the Shop brand and signals a long-term commitment to building it into a major consumer-facing platform.
