You.com, a new search engine founded by former Salesforce employees Bryan McCann and Richard Socher, aims to offer an alternative to Google’s search experience using artificial intelligence to personalize results.
The company was launched in 2020, and raised $20 million in funding led by Salesforce founder Marc Benioff in 2021. Interesting to know is that Benioff is the previous owner the domain name You.com domain. Benioff transferred ownership of the domain to the startup.
To differentiate from Google search, You.com provides improved search results by incorporating apps and interactive widgets into its results pages. When users search for something, they may see carousels of information from apps like Yelp or prompts to use tools like Stable Diffusion. This approach differs from other Google alternatives that prioritize privacy. After building over 200 apps, You.com is now inviting third-party developers to build their own search apps on its platform. This aims to create a search experience that is more private, more open to app makers, and more customizable for users.
In order to make a fairer portal to the internet—which is essentially what search engines are these days—I think you need to allow everyone to collaborate and participate in that.
Richard Socher, You.com’s founder and CEO
You.com hopes to reduce Google’s market share, that is currently at 86.64%.
