Names with stories: The story behind VersusGame.com
By Kristina Mišić access_time 5 min read

To get a deeper insight into the story behind VersusGame.com, we talk with John Vitti, CEO of Versus Game, about the origin of the company name, their domain name choice, and why consistency is the key to business success.

What is the story behind VersusGame?

I remember the office culture and how everyone would gather around the watercooler to talk about “the best movie”, “the new song” “a surprising stock market trend…” but nobody was making money off these predictions. I believe knowledge should be rewarded. We consume so much content and form opinions and predictions naturally but nobody gets paid for their knowledge. When I thought of VersusGame, the whole idea was to create a game for the people by the people. We want to put real money in people’s pockets.

When did you start thinking about your brand name and how did you settle on VersusGame?

We thought that it’s a good name that explains the game in one phrase since the games on our platform are classic “x” versus “y” style. We also wanted a name that’s fun and invokes action, and this brand makes users think ‘what is this new app?’

How did you get the domain name VersusGame.com for your brand? Why did you select that one exactly?

We argued for weeks to make this a reality. When it came time to find the domain, we felt lucky that it was available. We had it created and we all fell in love with it.

How has owning VersusGame.com affected your business? Do you own any other domain names?

That’s the only one! It has really increased our brand visibility, and allows users to truly understand what we’re all about.

Who is your target customer and how is your brand name helping in reaching them?

Our target customer are those heavy consumers and online gamers. It’s the people that always got yelled at as kids because they were spending too much time watching TV or listening to music too loud. Our audience is global, from different economic backgrounds and with different passions. One surprising stat – our users are mostly women ages 18-35 years old, and they’re the ones that tend to win our games more frequently.

How do you keep your brand consistent across different channels online and offline?

The name VersusGame makes it easy to understand and remember off the top of your head. Since people make predictions organically, it’s easy to keep our brand consistent across all channels and mediums.

Why should entrepreneurs value their brand?

Entrepreneurs should value their brand because of brand identity. Consistency is everything. You want to keep your brand sacred. Support it and always keep it top of mind.

Has the pandemic affected your company in any way? What has changed since?

Our brand is through an app, and in fact, a survey found that 72 percent of people reported their social media consumption increased during the pandemic. Prediction is human nature – people made predictions long before the pandemic and they will continue to make them after. The uncertainty and unstable job economy from the pandemic has caused people to get more creative with their earning potential, and it’s been a great way for people to make money while at home.

What do you do to make sure your marketing is effective?

Our goal is to focus on the clients, always. We make sure our messaging is accurate and we are up to date on every trend in pop culture. We want any trending TV shows, music videos, etc. to be front and center for our app users.

What would your advice be to entrepreneurs who are just starting out, in general, and when it comes to branding and naming?

It starts with the people; the team and those that you surround yourself with. Once you find your people, then anything is possible! Coming up with the brand name is crucial – and once you pick it, commit to it. Make sure you’re always thinking about the end goal that you want and work backward. How can you achieve your biggest goal? Bumps in the road may occur, but always remember why you started out in the first place.

Where do you see your business in the future and how does your brand name fit into that vision?

We want the people to take over creating games on the app so that they can earn more money, and we’ll use VersusGame as the medium to support them. Our goal is driven by creators who want to make money by doing what they love and consuming the trends they already know about. We hope to give power to the people!

We hope the above information will help you in making informed decisions about your brand. If you want to say hi or have any questions about naming, branding, and domain names get in touch, we’re always happy to hear from you.
