By Monica Stankova access_time 2 min read

BNY Mellon, or The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, is a global financial services corporation that was formed from the merger of The Bank of New York and Mellon Financial Corporation in 2007. It is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services holding companies, with its headquarters located in New York City.

The origins of BNY Mellon trace back to the founding of The Bank of New York by Alexander Hamilton in 1784, making it the oldest banking corporations in the United States. Mellon Financial, on the other hand, was originally founded as T. Mellon and Sons’ Bank in Pittsburgh in 1869 by Thomas Mellon and his sons.

BNY Mellon offers a broad array of services, including investment management, investment services, and wealth management, overseeing nearly $50 trillion in assets for clients across more than 100 markets.

On June 11, 2024, BNY Mellon announced a significant rebrand to simply BNY, reflecting its evolution and modern approach to banking and financial services. The company’s legal parent name will remain The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation. The bank’s divisions will be renamed BNY Investments, BNY Wealth, and BNY Pershing.

These changes complement the company’s evolution as a leading global financial services company. The updated brand conveys trust, resilience and innovation, and helps us align the full breadth of our offerings and capabilities under one brand, to improve familiarity with who we are and all that we do for our clients.

As part of its rebrand, the company acquired the three-letter .com domain BNY.com.

Bank of New York Mellon ranks 130th on the Fortune 500 list for 2024 and joins 55 other companies on that list that harness the benefits of owning a three-letter .com domain. These domains are highly prized for their brevity and adaptability, commonly serving as easy-to-remember acronyms for longer company names. With more than 150 million .com domains registered worldwide, possessing a three-letter .com domain reflects a company’s status and represents a significant investment in establishing and maintaining a strong, recognisable brand identity.
