Overview

Winter resorts are a beloved destination for a variety of people, including skiers, snowboarders, and winter sports enthusiasts, as well as those who simply love the magic of snow and the warmth of a cozy fireplace.

With the rapid advancement of technology, many of these resorts are leveraging digital marketing strategies to attract visitors and establish their online presence. One important aspect of this is the selection of a domain name, which serves as the address for the resort’s website and plays a crucial role in establishing the resort’s online identity. A well-chosen domain name can help to build customer trust and drive word-of-mouth marketing.

In this article, we will provide a concise overview of some of the top winter resorts across the globe, and analyze the brand and domain names they’ve chosen, as well as the considerations taken into account when making those choices.

Namepicks

Gstaad

Gstaad is a small village located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. It is known for its picturesque alpine setting, world-class ski resorts, and luxurious hotels and chalets. The history of Gstaad as a winter destination can be traced back to the early 20th century, when it was discovered by wealthy European and American tourists who were drawn to its unspoiled mountain landscape and clean, crisp air.

The history of Destination Gstaad is deeply entrenched in the local population, who take great pride in preserving their traditions and Alpine authenticity. This includes the challenging living conditions in the mountains and the continuation of traditional crafts and customs. Travelers have been describing the beauty of the valley since the 18th century and it has become a popular holiday destination in the 19th century. The completion of the Montreux-Oberland railway in 1905 created a connection between Gstaad and the outside world, thus laying the groundwork for the growth of tourism. The region’s first tourist associations were established in Gstaad and Saanen in 1906 and this was followed by a decade of hotel-building, the most famous of which is the Gstaad Palace, opened in December 1913. The infrastructure in the region was reconstructed in the 1920s and 1930s with the building of the Kurpark, Kursaal, golf course, tennis courts and the first funicular railway on the Wispile in 1934. The first summer chairlift, the “Telesiège” on the Wasserngrat, was opened in 1946.

Over the years, Gstaad has become synonymous with luxury and exclusivity, attracting a wealthy and famous clientele. It has also established itself as a hub for a variety of winter sports, including skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and ice hockey. In addition to its winter attractions, Gstaad is also a popular destination in the summer months, with hiking, mountain biking, and golf being among the popular activities.

One important aspect of this has been the securement of the Gsraad.ch and Gstaad.com domain names. This not only helps to establish Gstaad’s online identity and protect it as a brand, but also makes it easier for visitors to find and share information about it.

St. Moritz

St. Moritz’s winter resort dates back to 1864 when Caspar Badrutt made a wager with four British summer guests that if they found St. Moritz attractive in winter, he’d invite them to stay. This marked the start of winter tourism in the Alps, with the first tourist office in Switzerland established the same year. St. Moritz developed rapidly, hosting the 1928 & 1948 Winter Olympics, 20+ FIBT World Championships, 4 FIS Alpine Ski Championships, 40+ Engadin Skimarathons, a golf tournament (1979), snow polo tournament (1985), Cricket on Ice (1989) & Sailing/Windsurfing World Championships. In the 1980s, St. Moritz was promoted & registered as ‘Top of the World’. The expression was registered as a trademark by the tourist office in 1987.

The area was first developed in the late 1600s by Swiss-born adventurer Jacques Balmat, who was the first to ascend the mountain peak of Mont Blanc. Since 1741, the VallĂ©e de Chamouny has seen a surge in tourism, initiated by William Windham and Richard Pocock’s thrilling accounts of their journey, documented in “Voyages aux Glaciers de Savoie”. It has since become renowned for its skiing, snowboarding, and climbing champions – including James Couttet, Charles Bozon, Lucienne Smith-Couttet, and Karine Ruby. Courchevel

Courchevel is a ski resort located in the French Alps. It was originally opened in 1938 by the French National Ski Federation and since then, has become one of the most popular ski resorts in the world. Two Savoyard men, Laurent Chappis and Maurice Michaud, first imagined the designs for the new resort while they were held captive in a Nazi prisoner of war camp in Austria. From February to April 1946, Chappis – an avid skier – made multiple solo ski trips in the Trois VallĂ©es region to map the best routes and bring his ideas on the resort’s layout to life. His goal was to establish a resort that was as close to nature as possible; no concrete structures, no deforestation and no overly tall buildings. The initial plans meant to leave every rock and tree undisturbed; the resort would be built around the existing terrain, rather than bulldozing over it. An example of this is the Chalet Petit Navre in Courchevel 1850, designed by Denys Pradelle. It is made from natural wood with a low-sloping roof and blends into the landscape without being too noticeable.

Courchevel has always been well known for its excellent ski conditions and its luxurious accommodation, which is why it quickly became a favourite destination for the wealthy and famous. The resort has also benefitted from strong marketing campaigns in recent years, which have allowed it to reach a larger audience. Courchevel has also been a pioneer when it comes to leveraging the power of the internet to promote itself.

Interesting fact

Courchevel is not just one village or ski resort – it is actually a chain of several villages located at different altitudes (1350, 1550, 1650 and 1850). In 2003 Roman Abramovich tried to buy Courchevel 1850.

nightlife there is better).

In addition to its strong online presence, Courchevel has also leveraged its reputation to create a strong brand identity. The resort has become synonymous with luxury and adventure, and its marketing campaigns have helped to solidify this reputation. Courchevel has become one of the most popular ski resorts in the world, thanks to its excellent ski conditions, luxurious accommodation, and strong marketing campaigns.

They changed it to Garibaldi Whistler Mountain because of the whistling sound the marmots make as they greet visitors.

Val d’Isère

Val d’Isère is one of the world’s most popular ski resorts. Since his first visit in 1929, Jacques Mouflier had become an ardent admirer of Val d’Isère and was convinced that it could be developed into a ski resort. Despite the harsh climate and the remoteness of the village, Nicolas Bazile, the mayor of the time, recognized the potential of the project and their meeting in the summer of 1931 began the project. In 1932, the development of essential public services such as the post office, electricity, running water, improved road access and the first hotels started.

In 1936, the first chamber of commerce was formed to represent the resort’s economic activities and a town planning policy was implemented to maintain the character of the village and divide the commune into two zones (sports and accommodation). In 1937, two ministers being stranded by a blizzard and the opening of the road up the Col de l’Iseran made Val d’Isère a well-known name throughout France.

Today, the resort is one of the top destinations for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities. My father was clearly losing his mind! And yet …He seemed so convinced of the reality of these impossible stories that, without realising it, I was immediately won over by his enthusiasm. It was in 1935.

Dominique Mouflier, daughter of Jacques Mouflier, on how her father initiated Val d’Isère

Sun Valley

In 1935, Count Felix Schaffgotsch was hired by Union Pacific Railroad chairman Averell Harriman to find the ideal spot for an American Ski Resort. After touring various mountains in the West, the Count was ready to give up as he heard about Ketchum, an old mining town in Idaho. Upon arriving in the Wood River Valley, he was captivated and sent a message to Harriman, saying it surpassed any place he had ever seen in Switzerland, Austria, or the U.S. Harriman approved, and thus the Sun Valley Lodge was completed in December 1936, marking the founding of Sun Valley.

Since then, Sun Valley has become a beloved destination over the years thanks to its diverse terrain, excellent customer service, and commitment to safety. Avoriaz

Since its establishment in 1966, Avoriaz 1800 has been an innovator in mountain tourism, taking a responsible approach. The plateau on which the resort was built used to be owned by the counts of Rovorée, but after becoming the property of the village of Morzine, the Alpine pastures were known as the “Rovorée” land which, over time, changed in pronunciation to “Avorée”, then “Avoréaz”, and eventually became the name we know today, Avoriaz (the “z” is silent).

It was a very dry and unfertile plateau populated with a few chalets occupied by herdsmen who brought their animals up the mountain in spring and back down to the valley in autumn. On 22nd February 1960, Jean Vuarnet, a resident of Morzine and skier, became the downhill skiing World Champion and Olympic Champion in Squaw Valley. After retiring, he returned to Morzine and set out to realize his dream of creating a resort like no other, one that would ban cars and let skiers take over the centre-resort.

Sixty years on, this break from tradition still makes Avoriaz 1800 an idyllic winter resort, popular destination for ski and snowboard enthusiasts from around the world.

Interesting fact

Gerard Bremont, the son of a leading French industrialist and a major investor in the resort, famously called Avoriaz the “Saint Tropez de Neige”.

It was quickly renamed Aspen — rebranded because of the trees for better marketing possibilities, for finding investors basically.

Davos

On 8 February 1865, Dr Friedrich Unger and Hugo Richter from Germany arrived in the Landwassertal Valley and checked into the Hotel Strela in Davos. Both men were suffering from debilitating illnesses and hoped that the Alpine air would help them recover. To the surprise of the locals, they began a course of treatment on a bed made from a hay sled covered with boards, and it was not long before they were skating on the Davos Lake. Dr Unger eventually settled in Davos, working as a doctor for over 20 years, and Hugo Richter married a local woman and took over the Strela Guest House before transferring his publishing business to Davos in 1872. This marked the beginning of winter sports in Davos, and the two men are credited with making it the popular holiday destination that it is today.

This is not the only lucky accident in Davos’ history. The Parsenn Derby, held in 1924, was one of the first downhill ski races in Switzerland and is the oldest all-comers race in the country. It takes place on a 12km-long downhill run from the freezing ski hut to Küblis, which was originally discovered by accident in 1895 by four British ski tourists. They effectively got lost due to their minimal knowledge of the area and ended up in Küblis after a freezing night in a search for another village, Arosa. Since then, the descent has become a legendary Alpine myth and a popular challenge for snow-sport fans.

Zermatt

Zermatt is a picturesque Swiss alpine town located at the upper end of Mattertal in the Canton of Valais. It is well known for its mountaineering and ski resort, with some of Switzerland’s highest peaks nearby. The economy is heavily reliant on tourism, with around half of the jobs in the town being in hotels or restaurants and almost half of all dwellings being vacation apartments.

Zermatt has become renowned as a mountaineering and ski resort throughout the Alps since the mid-19th century, when it was “discovered” by British mountaineers, most notably Edward Whymper, whose 1865 conquest of the Matterhorn made the village famous.

The Matterhorn was one of the last alpine mountains to be conquered, and the first ascent ended dramatically with only 3 of the 7 climbers surviving the descent; the story is related in the Matterhorn Museum. This feat was followed by a rush on the mountains surrounding Zermatt, which led to the construction of many tourist facilities.

The name of the village, as well as that of the Matterhorn itself, derives from the alpine meadows, or Matten (in German), in the valley. The name appears first as Zur Matte – “in the meadow”, and became later Zermatt, first appearing on a map in 1495 and in a text in 1545, though it may have been used for some time prior.

Interesting fact

In Zermatt, upon arrival, you will be enchanted by the quaint cobblestone streets, horses with sleighs awaiting passengers, and the clean, fresh air without the disturbance of cars, buses, or honking. This is because all the vehicles there are battery-operated, making them nearly silent.

In an ideal world I would spend every weekend in Zermatt.

Vanessa Mae, Singaporean-born British violinist

By 1588, the Berghof had become a part of St. Petersberg Castle’s farmsteads. Today, the Berghof is used as accommodation for guests.

Isola 2000

Isola 2000 is a ski resort in the southern French Alps located on the territory of the commune of Isola and operated by the council of the Alpes-Maritimes. It first opened for business back in 1971. Isola 2000 is situated close to the Mercantour National Park, about 90 kilometers from Nice, France.

The idea for the resort was conceived in the late 1960s by a British Army ex-officer and Olympic skier, Peter Boumphrey, who spotted a basin in the area on a map. The local mayor of Isola, seeing little prospects for development due to the citizens migrating to cities, agreed to let Boumphrey and London-based contractors build the resort.

Prior to the opening of the resort, a small dirt road leading up to its location was often blocked off due to avalanches and rockslides during winter and summer, respectively. The road was improved, and upon completion, Isola 2000 had the capacity to sleep 6,000 people.

Today, Isola 2000 is known for its reliable snowfall and wide range of ski runs and slopes, making it a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. The resort has a modern online presence on Isola2000.com. The website features all the information that skiers need to plan their trip, including accommodation and activities, as well as a live webcam to show the current conditions.
