Starcloud, formerly known as Lumen Orbit, is a Redmond, Washington-based startup founded in early 2024 with the mission to build huge data centers in space. Space-based data centers will leverage 24/7 solar energy and passive cooling, enabling rapid gigawatt-scale deployment, avoiding the Earth’s permitting constraints.
In February 2025, the company rebranded to Starcloud to prevent potential confusion with another tech company. In a GeekWire post, CEO Philip Johnston explained that the change was necessary due to Lumen Technologies’ trademark rights over the name “Lumen” for data centers. The new name follows a celestial branding trend, seen in companies like SpaceX’s Starship, Boeing’s Starliner, Gravitics’ StarMax, and Voyager Space’s Starlab.
Alongside the rebrand, Starcloud raised an additional $10 million in funding, bringing its total seed investment to $21 million. The company is backed by investors including NFX, Y Combinator, FUSE, Soma Capital, and scout funds from Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia.
Starcloud secured the Exact Brand Match (EBM) domain Starcloud.com for its new identity. Securing this domain is important during a rebrand, as it ensures a seamless transition for existing clients and partners while strengthening the new brand identity.
