Zeno Rocha’s Resend.com: A Case Study in Effective Domain Naming
By Monica Stankova access_time 2 min read

Choosing a strong brand name and securing the best domain for it is one of the most significant challenges in starting a new venture. Zeno Rocha, Co-founder and CEO of Resend.com, shares his experiences and offers valuable advice to other founders navigating the same journey in his post, “Why I spent $25,000 on a domain (or how to pick a startup name).”

When Zeno and his co-founder Bu started their venture, they didn’t initially prioritise naming. Instead, they focused on building their product, choosing the domain Zeebbu.com by combining their first names. As Zeno puts it:

We wanted to focus on building the product and nothing else, so we got a domain that combined our first names. I know, I know, terrible name! But it didn’t matter.

As their MVP evolved, they realised the need for a more suitable name. They purchased “Klotty.com,” which, although still not ideal, was easier to type. Acceptance into Y Combinator marked a turning point, prompting them to seek a strong, memorable name that conveyed seriousness about their company.

To streamline the process of selecting the perfect domain, Zeno’s team established a list of criteria. The domain needed to be a .com TLD to ensure global recognition and trust. It had to be less than 10 characters to enhance memorability and ease of use. The name should be connected to the product, making it meaningful and intuitive for users. It also needed to be easy to type and pronounce, even in noisy environments. Eventually, they landed on Resend.com, a domain that met all their criteria and perfectly encapsulated the essence of their product.

We wanted a strong name, a name that would send a message, a name that could communicate that we were serious about this company idea.
