Did Elon Musk Buy Dot.com to Troll OpenAI?
By Monica Stankova access_time 3 min read

On September 29, OpenAI launched Dots, a set of always-on AI agents that keep working on tasks after the user closes ChatGPT. Shortly afterwards, users noticed that Dot.com belongs to Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI and currently redirects to the download page for Grok Bot.

Whois records show the domain changed hands in July, about two months before OpenAI announced Dots. The discovery took off after @birdabo, an anonymous X user, posted it on launch day. Given Musk’s history with OpenAI, the reaction wasn’t surprising. He co-founded the company, left, built the rival Grok and later sued OpenAI, so many people assumed the redirect was deliberate.

Some posts claimed Musk spent $20 million on the domain just to troll Sam Altman. There is currently no public evidence supporting either part of that claim. The purchase price has not been disclosed, and SpaceXAI has not said why it acquired Dot.com.

A Lesson in Domain Strategy

Whatever the reason, the outcome is awkward for OpenAI. It launched a product called Dots, and one of the most natural domains for that name belongs to a direct competitor and points people to a rival product. OpenAI doesn’t own the Exact Brand Match (EBM) domain name, Dots.com, either. It is reportedly held by a defunct company.

It’s a good reminder of why domains matter once a product goes public. A company can own the trademark, build the technology and invest heavily in launching a new name, but people do not always navigate the internet by the URL the company chose. They type what they remember. With a name like Dots, Dot.com and Dots.com are the obvious first guesses, and in this case one of them leads straight to a competitor.

A Domain Worth Watching

We do not know what the company plans to do with Dot.com. For now, it redirects to Grok Bot, and no concrete reason has been given for the purchase.

As a three-letter .com domain, Dot.com is a rare and valuable asset. On top of that, “dot” is a familiar word with strong associations with the internet, technology, domains and digital products, making the name especially relevant for a company like SpaceXAI.

This isn’t the first time Elon Musk has made headlines over a domain name. In 2017, he bought X.com back from PayPal, and years later the domain returned to the spotlight when Twitter was rebranded as X. Tesla also attracted attention when it paid around $11 million for Tesla.com.

Whether Dot.com turns out to be a serious investment or just a well-played redirect, we’ll have to wait and see.
