OpenAI has added another high-value asset to its portfolio by acquiring the domain Chat.com, which now redirects to ChatGPT, its popular AI-powered chatbot.
Chat.com has a rich history on the web, first registered in September 1996. The domain was last acquired in March 2023 by Dharmesh Shah, HubSpot co-founder and prominent domain enthusiast, who shared that he paid over $15 million for it, marking his largest domain purchase to date. Although OpenAI hasn’t disclosed its purchase price, this move shows its commitment to building a strong, accessible online presence for ChatGPT.
While reviewing recent domain activities related to OpenAI on Whoxy, we came across an interesting update: the domain Sora.com changed hands in October 2024 and now shows as owned by OpenAI. Although the domain isn’t currently resolving, if OpenAI has indeed secured it, this could signal potential plans to use Sora.com for its text-to-video model. We’ll be following developments around the domain to see what the company has planned for it.
Update: As of December 6, 2024, the domain name Sora.com already redirects to OpenAI’s text-to-video model Sora.
