YC Robotics Startups for 2024 and Their Domain Name Choices
By Tsani Gramatikova access_time 8 min read

Y Combinator (YC), the Silicon Valley powerhouse, has been the engine driving over 4,000 startups into the tech scene since its inception in 2005. Known for shaping the industry, YC periodically updates its focus to align with emerging trends. This year marks a significant shift as the accelerator embraces cutting-edge robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and space technology advancements.

“In the field of robotics, the future is limited only by our imagination,” says Bob Reiner, capturing the boundless potential that YC seeks to harness. In February 2024, YC unveiled its newly revitalised Request for Startups, the first major update since 2018, calling for innovations in spatial computing, climate tech, and AI. The emphasis on AI is particularly strong, with applications ranging from machine learning (ML) in robotics to LLMs for automating back-office processes.

By November, YC had introduced its Robotics Startups for 2024, spotlighting ventures pushing the boundaries of AI-powered robotics and defence tech.

For decades, everyone has known that robots are the future, as any science fiction novel will show. But that future proved elusive because previous generations of robots were expensive and brittle, requiring controlled conditions. With the rapid improvements in foundation models, it’s finally possible to make robots that have human-level perception and judgement. That’s been the missing piece.

Beyond a simple refresh, this update marks a strategic shift towards sectors set to reshape industries and unlock new market opportunities.

Robotics market is experiencing significant growth, with an estimated value of approximately USD 89.68 billion in 2024, projected to nearly double to USD 159.28 billion by 2029, reflecting a 12.17% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

Key trends include:

  • AI-Driven Evolution: Robots are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence, enabling them to learn and adapt in real-time, thereby enhancing their decision-making capabilities.
  • Rise of Collaborative Robots (Cobots): Cobots are transforming workplaces by working alongside humans, boosting productivity and ensuring safer, more efficient task execution.
  • Service Robots Boom: Service robots are expanding their presence in sectors like healthcare and agriculture, with the segment forecasted to reach USD 36.20 billion in 2024.

Interesting Facts: Advancements in robotics have led to the development of self-assembling robots, such as MIT’s M-Blocks, which can autonomously form various structures.

In Japan, robots are increasingly become companions, even featuring in talk shows, reflecting the country’s unique integration of robotics into daily life.

Based on our analysis of the robotics startups funded by YC for 2024, we have identified the following key highlights in naming and domain name usage.

Domain Names Highlights

Among the 62 companies on the list, .com domains dominate with 49, reflecting the strong preference for this universally recognised and trusted extension.

31 companies have invested in Exact Brand Match (EBM) domains, gaining the advantages of consistent branding, easier memorability, and increased credibility. EBM domains offer a strong advantage by reinforcing companies’ brand identity and ensuring a more seamless and professional online presence.

3 companies opt for dash-separated domains. Dashes are often included with two-word brand names or with added words when the business has to compromise on their domain if the exact brand match name is taken/not within reach.

Robotics and Technology Focus

Names like Bear Flag Robotics, Nextera Robotics, and Opentrons emphasise their connection to robotics and technology, clearly signalling their industry focus.

Nature-Inspired Names

Companies such as Gecko, Hedgehog, and Azalea Robotics draw inspiration from nature, evoking qualities like adaptability, resilience, and growth, making the names memorable and relatable.

Abstract or Inventive Names

Brands like Polymath, Perceptive, and Faction use abstract concepts to convey intelligence, adaptability, and transformation ideas. These names evoke a sense of innovation and forward-thinking, providing flexibility for evolving brand identities and future growth.

Futuristic and Space-Themed Names

With names like AstroForge and Spaceium, companies project a vision of innovation and exploration, tapping into the excitement of futuristic technologies and space ventures.
