What happens with your brand when social media sites go down?
By Tatiana Bonneau access_time 2 min read

Facebook apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Facebook itself, were down on Monday 4th October 2021 in a major outage. As of the time of writing of this article they still are.

The internet is going crazy as everyone realizes the impact this has on our daily lives – people can’t connect with their friends and loved ones, follow what is going on in the world, share pictures of their lunch (oh the horror!), puppies (see That Is a real issue!) and cats (I mean, what is the internet without cats, really??). Even though that all causes us a lot of pain, it is probably a good moment to stop and reflect on something. How much exactly do we depend on those apps?

Whether it is in our personal lives or as business owners, just how addicted are we to social media? And while in our personal lives this can be a reminder to pick up the phone and make that phone call to grandma, go knock on the door of your friends, read that book you « never have the time to Â», or simply look at the sky, it is a bit of a struggle to think of what positive affects does that outage have on business.

A quick look over twitter and you can see the panic spreading.

The above is just a tiny bit of what’s going on but I’m sure you have Twitter (for now!) and can check for yourself.

And if you’ve poured all your cash and have all your customers on those social channels..are they really yours? It’s kind of a slap in the face realizing the money is gone, but the customers too. Because they were never yours. How can they be if you rely on a third party to reach them? Every single time.

I am sure this will result in some time of reflection and everyone will draw their own conclusions. And whatever your conclusions are, I hope you at least take the time – you know, now the time that you don’t have to spend on those apps – to imagine how good would it be to have control over your relationships. Be them personal, or business. Sure, it takes more effort, but it’s worth it, right? Because if it’s not then you are in the wrong relationship.
